Testimonials

Right from the beginning, school was tough for our son.  Although a very bright kid, he was not able to work to his full ability because of an overwhelming sense of anxiety all day long.  He had difficulty attending a full day of school without a blowup or two.

Our son went to a total of 4 different schools in the district — some of which were better than others – as well as homeschooling.  One school in particular was very good and our son was thriving.  Unfortunately, he was transferred to another classroom where the new teacher didn’t use any of the recommendations from the previous school. That teacher had a rigid system that each student had to follow.  Unfortunately, it put too much pressure on our son and he was told that another school would be more appropriate.

We visited Glen Eden and, although their philosophy takes getting used to because it’s different than any other school, I have to say — It works!  Instead of trying to fit our son to their program, they spent a lot of time getting to know our son, noticing when he’s more relaxed and when he’s more agitated.  They set him up for success by having him do schoolwork in those scenarios that he’s more relaxed in. They never phoned us to come and pick him up because he wasn’t faring well.  He developed many deep relationships with the staff.  In his own words:

‘When I first came to Glen Eden, I had no hope.  I didn’t think I’d be successful.  You gave me hope and now I can see that I can be successful.  I couldn’t have done it without you.’

Admittedly, I was nervous during the first year, wondering if he was doing enough schoolwork. In hindsight, I had no need to be nervous.  Over time, as the anxiety lessened, our son’s motivation increased ten-fold.  He caught up in his work much faster than I could imagine.  He became clear in the goals he was working toward and is very motivated.

He has now completed his fourth year at Glen Eden.  He won’t be returning next year because he will be mainstreamed in our local high school.  After so many years of struggle, all three of us are so pleased.  My husband and I have no doubt he’ll thrive in his new setting next year.

Best of all, as his school life improved, so did our home life.  No more blowups.  My own anxiety over parenting greatly decreased.  We are thoroughly enjoying parenting a teenager who is curious about so many things and following what he’s passionate about.  Our family and friends are all amazed by his transformation.

Our 12 year old son has high functioning autism.  Although he did reasonably well in the public system for most of elementary school, he had a terrible experience in his grade 6 year, when some ill thought out changes were made to his education program.  His behavioural problems escalated and became unmanageable for the school staff; by the end of the school year he was no longer in a class and had to be one to one with the principal full time.  He made no academic progress that year.

It was clearly time for a change.  We met with staff from Glen Eden and were impressed with their program and what they had to offer.  We started our son at the summer program at Glen Eden and he loved it immediately.  He started full time in the fall of 2015 and has been enthusiastic about school ever since.  His behaviour is managed effectively and calmly, without interfering with his academic work.  He feels cared about and accepted, things that he had lost during his grade 6 year.  Academically, our son has made tremendous progress; he is doing more work and learning  at rate that far exceeds anything he has done  previously.  We are grateful to staff at Glen Eden for taking our son when he was at his worst and helping him turn things around completely.

A Light at the End of the Tunnel

March 15, 2012

My daughter is currently ten years old. At the age of six she was diagnosed with XXX Syndrome, Sensory Processing Disorder (similar to autism), Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Developmental Co-ordination Disorder, a Benign Tremor in her right hand and borderline Intellectual Disorder. While she “looks” like a typical child, she is not. She struggles on a daily basis to do what comes naturally to most people in their daily routine. She attended Kindergarten, Grade One, and half of Grade Two at our local elementary school. These two and a half years were filled with frustration, misunderstanding and stress. There were many days that were spent outside her classroom or at home because I was called to come and pick her up as the Teachers and EA’s could not handle her.

In February of 2009, my daughter was sent to Glen Eden Multimodal Centre , where she receives one on one instruction and help with her disabilities. I am happy to say that the last three years, while still not easy, have been the best three years of our lives! Glen Eden’s approach and care for all the children is amazing! My daughter can now read and do math – something she did not learn in the public elementary school. Glen Eden Multimodal Centre is for us a dream come true!

The staff at Glen Eden are well equipped to deal with complex children like my daughter. Nothing alarms them and they take every day as it comes and they deal with each situation as it arises. She is NEVER sent home. She is NEVER left on her own. She is NEVER dealt with in a negative manner. She is NEVER told that there is something wrong with her. She is treated with dignity and respect – as all people should. Glen Eden Multimodal Centre is for us a dream come true.  A light at the end of a long, long tunnel.

“As Program Director of the Developmental Disorders Program at UBC, I can attest to the need for a spectrum of educational settings for children and youth with complex neurodevelopmental disorders. Many of these children also have significant challenging behaviours which require expertise which may not be available in the current school system. I have children who cannot attend school at all because of this mix of serious challenging behaviour and complex neurodevelopmental disorder. Glen Eden’s value is of immense importance in our community and I urge the school to be recognized as an essential service…”

“During [my daughter's] time at Glen Eden, I have watched [her] grow and evolve from a child who was completely unable to function in a typical classroom and mainstream school environment to a child who now thrives with the learning and support she is given. Quite frankly, I don’t know where [she] would be today if she was not able to gain benefit from the educational and clinical approach that the dedicated staff at Glen Eden provide for her daily. Their genuine caring and interest in each and every child goes above and beyond what a typical school environment can provide for children like [her] who need that specialized learning. [My daughter] has demonstrated that their approach works, both academically, behaviourally, and socially.”

“As a private practice Speech-Language Pathologist, I have spent the past three years working with several students at Glen Eden and consulting with educational and clinical staff. The staff and administrators have been open to suggestions that encourage generalization of our clients’ speech, language and communication goals. In my time at Glen Eden I have been given every opportunity to train staff in the current best practices in Speech and Language Pathology. The staff are enthusiastic to learn new techniques and are adept at tracking changes in communicative behaviour over time. I have observed communication growth in all of these clients that can be directly attributed to the hard work of the caring staff at Glen Eden. The school’s approach is relationship based and multimodal, and differs from many of the traditional approaches available elsewhere in the province. I appreciate the deep connections each staff member makes with our clients, and the care put into planning individualized treatment.”

“Our daughter, who is ‘special needs’ went to Glen Eden for grades 1-3. We were told she would probably never learn to read. Through the dedication of the Glen Eden teachers, she proved the doctors wrong.”

“When all other school had abandoned our son and gave us no room for hope that he could be taught, Glen Eden School offered us a window of hope. Hope that with some badly needed individual instruction and one on one therapy for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and severe learning disability, our son would be able to complete high school graduation in the public school system. Glen Eden offered him instruction, offered us counseling and gave our son some skills to help him handle his severe learning/behavior problems.”

“For us Glen Eden was the answer to a difficult situation. Our daughter was a grade 9 student who was getting ‘lost’ in the system, and losing all motivation to try. As well, she was losing confidence in her ability to be able to succeed at anything academically. Through a wonderful educational consultant we were sent to Glen Eden and were welcomed there by all the staff and made to feel comfortable and hopeful about our daughter’s future. Through the guidance and support of the teachers and staff, she was able to grow and mature into a responsible, friendly and positive person. She graduated from Glen Eden in June, 1999 and went on the receive an ‘A’ standing at a college of applied design this year.”

“Our family and our son in particular, would be living very different lives today were it not for the incredible help we received from Glen Eden. Thanks to Glen Eden and the staff there the province has one more high school graduate who is a contributing member of society, rather than a drain on the justice system. This is not an exaggeration. Our son is now working full time and considering a continuation of his education. This is the boy we never thought would make it through grade 9. He was unsuccessful at public school and growing more and more violent at home out of frustration with his situation. He had begun to get involved in petty theft and other self-destructive behaviors. It took two years of intense therapy and caring professionals to begin to turn him around.”
